Description

This competency standard unit covers the explosion-protection aspects of overhauling & repairing explosion-protected equipment & the activities required of a responsible person.

This competency is required to be held by the responsible person who signs off on work conducted by a recognised service facility.

The course develops the ability of the student, enabling them to:

  • Establish and document the level of work required
  • Arrange for and manage the conduct of the overhaul/repair work to be carried out
  • Verify compliance of the overhauled/repaired equipment
  • Completion of the necessary documentation associate with the work performed

Description

This course covers assessing the certification documentation of explosion-protected equipment with a certificate of conformity other than an IECEx, ANZEx or AUS Ex Certificate, and producing a conformity assessment document which could allow the equipment to be used for Group II or Group III.

It encompasses skills and knowledge to examine and compare document content, compare requirements of IEC or AS/NZS standards with alternative standards on which the original certification was based, knowledge of explosion-protection techniques and technical report writing.

It is applicable to Group I for assessing:

  • The conformity of equipment to a specific standard

Assessing equipment certified to a previous standard, for conformity to a current standard

Description

Successful completion will provide a person with the knowledge and skillset required by the gazetted competencies, for the position of an Electrical Engineering Manager at an underground coal mine.

Aspects covered by the course include Legislative and Australian Standards requirements, OEM requirements and specifications, Industry best practices, and the effects of environmental impacts.

The course also addresses decision making processes for the determination of safe and effective procedures, methods of evaluating and maintaining employee’s competency, selection of appropriate and cost effective explosion protected equipment, and the documentation aspect involved with the management of hazardous areas.
